Egyptian cotton is prized throughout the textile industry for its yield of the longest-staple cotton in the world. The staple refers to the individual cotton fiber, also known as the “hair”. The length of the staple allows the cotton to be spun into a smooth, strong and extremely fine yarn, which can then be woven into a very high thread count fabric. Short-fiber, less expensive cotton makes a weaker thread with many breaks that show up on the surface of the fabric, causing it to pill and wear out. Egyptian cotton sheets labeled as high thread count may actually consist of many inferior-grade short-staple cotton yarns jammed into a square inch. The fabric resulting from this type of base fiber will feel heavy and coarse and be subject to excessive pilling and wear.
